What is Rolfing?

Rolfing® is a powerful system of deep-tissue bodywork. It releases deep physical tensions and rejuvenates the body back into to its healthy, natural shape.

Rolfing goes much deeper than traditional massage. It is a whole sywoman being rolfedstems approach to re-integrating your entire body by manipulating the fascia - the tissues that connects muscle to your joints. The fascia holds our shape and affects the relative positions of each of our life supporting systems, including bones, organs, nerves, blood vessels, etc.

Carefully moving this fascial tissue can have a profound, healing effect on your physical and emotional sense of well-being. Only Certified Rolfers have the advanced training and years of supervised practice it takes to safely and knowledgeably employ Rolfing® techniques. Mechanically, it calls for very specific and consciously directed movements - that help give the body back a more symmetrical shape and let it have a better posture and balance in gravity.

Rolfing® hurt?

Not so much. Working through very tense spots can bring up momentary intense sensations, usually followed by a profound wave of pleasure and release. Early in the first session, we will establish a level of physical intensity that you are totally comfortable with.

What about the emotions?

Most of us can sense that we hold our past emotional experiences in our bodies: a subtle holding of the breath; a bracing against gravity in the hips, back or perhaps the shoulders. Rolfing® is a way many people use to help process these, by easing some of these tensions, balancing and improving alignment. It also works on a more subtle level. Trauma and restricted impulses can also be “recorded” in the fascia, and by addressing this layer, Rolfing® can provide a safe, graduated way of releasing and re-owning some of this pent-up energy. The point is, we don’t want to re-awaken the trauma.

Can it make me a better athlete?

Rolfing® can enhance your athletic performance in many ways, notably the physical enjoyment of the activity! Rolfing® improves speed, power, fine coordination and balance, which are keys to perfecting any athletic skill. Specific interventions designed to complement and help re-balance your body in chosen discipline can be developed through the session work.

What is a series?

Rolfing® typically begins with a series of ten sessions, but can include as many as 15, depending on an individual's specific needs and level of "completion" at the 10 session mark. Each session lasts between an hour and 90 minutes and is done weekly or bi-weekly. Continuing on after ten sessions provides you with an on-going way to mitigate the damaging effects of stress, to enhance performance and to support a wide variety of personal growth practices.

Can I do less than a full series?

Special interventions to treat specific injuries can be accomplished in fewer sessions. It is recommended to get a series if you haven’t already had one, and to do at least three sessions to treat the new injury, if you have. This is in order to give your body time to adapt to the new input and allow the work a better chance to integrate. Experience has shown that this is the best way. I am open to whatever you request, as my client.
